Speak Finnish and Get to Know Finland: Participate in the: I Love Finnish Workshop!

The Ingrian Cultural Association will organize an I Love Finnish workshop in Helsinki on 2.8.-8.8.2010.

Our target group: people who are learning Finnish in their own countries (not university students) or who speak Finnish within their families (Ingrian Finns, Kveens, etc.).

The goals of the workshop are to:
- speak Finnish as much as possible
- get to know the Finnish people and Finland
- get to know students from other European countries
- familiarize you with Helsinki and Finland
- to communicate with your teacher and other participants via the Internet (if you want to)


I am Aili Mehiläinen, the teacher of the I Love Finnish workshop and of Finnish for Foreigners', a course I teach throughout the year. You can contact me by e-mail: aili.mehilainen@inkeri.com and ask me anything concerning the workshop or Finland. Feel free to write to me in Finnish, English or Russian.

If you want to participate in the workshop, you can print an application form from the website of your own national office. You can also find the Application Form at the website of the Ingrian Cultural Association: www.inkeri.com. Finland Students will be chosen before 1.5.2010
If you are selected you will be sent a personally addressed letter that you have been accepted along with a programme and instructions for the workshop. Do not buy a ticket to Helsinki before you have received your invitation and instructions!

2.8.2010 Arrival day
3.8 Morning: Introductory icebreaker. Meet in small groups and introduce yourself, nationality, heritage, etc.
Afternoon: General knowledge: What do you know about Finland?
Evening: European buffet.
4.8 Morning: Finnish values and culture. What is important to the Finns?
Afternoon: Finnish history and monuments. We will take a walking tour through the heart of Helsinki.
Evening: Visit the national history museum.
5.8 Morning: Getting to know different Finnish internet programs. (Computer assistance will be available).
Afternoon: Using language cards. Playing vocabulary games to develop speaking skills.
Evening: Visit to the Ateneum art museum.
5.8 Morning: Stumbling-blocks to learning the Finnish language. Is Finnish a hard language to learn or is it just different? We will share our experiences with learning Finnish.
Afternoon: Playing vocabulary games, like Alias, Yes or No, Would You Like to be a Millionaire, Like Peas in a Pod, etc. These games help develop speech and increase vocabulary.
Evening: Free time.
6.8 Morning: Finnish cuisine.
Afternoon: A lesson on telling short stories. (Believe it or not, Once upon a time, etc.)
Evening: Getting to know you in a Finnish sauna and the sauna tradition.
7.8 Morning: Nature picnic.
Afternoon: Finnish cafeteria. Open discussion with Finns and immigrants that are learning the Finnish language.
Evening: Free time.
8.8 Morning: Evaluation of this Finnish workshop.
Afternoon: Visit Seurasaari (open air museum in Helsinki).
Evening: Farewell dinner.
9.8 Departure day
